Austin Newborn Photography: A Complete Guide for New Parents
There's a window with a newborn that doesn't come back. In those first days, before the world has fully arrived for them, babies carry a quietness and a softness that is unlike any other moment in their lives. and yours. Photographing that window is something I take seriously.
If you're planning a newborn session in Austin, here's everything you actually need to know.
When to Book. And Why It Matters
Book during your second trimester. I know that feels early, but here's why: the ideal window for newborn photography is days 5–14 of life. Within that tiny window, newborns sleep the deepest, curl most naturally into posed positions, and still have that unmistakable brand-new quality.
That window is about ten days long. And for popular studios in Austin, those dates are spoken for months in advance.
When you book during pregnancy, we hold your spot with a flexible due date. Once baby arrives, you contact us within 24–48 hours, and we confirm your session within that ideal window. The earlier you book, the more flexibility we all have.
What the Day Actually Looks Like
Newborn sessions are not like other photography sessions. They run on the baby's schedule. full stop.
Plan to be at the studio for 2–4 hours. Some sessions wrap up in two. Others run longer. We never rush, and we don't watch the clock. What we do instead:
We warm the studio. Newborns are used to warmth, and a warm room is a sleeping baby. Our studio temperature is adjusted before you arrive.
We work in between feeds. You'll feed baby at the start of the session, and we'll time poses around sleep cycles. When baby needs to eat again, we stop, you feed, and we pick back up when they're settled.
We go at their pace. Some babies slide into poses effortlessly. Others need more time and patience. Neither is a problem. it's just newborn photography.
We include family and siblings. Once we have our posed newborn images, we bring in the rest of the family. Sibling portraits, parent-with-baby shots, and full family images round out the session beautifully.
Safety First. Always
I want to address this directly because new parents often wonder, and rightfully so.
Safety is never sacrificed for a shot. Ever.
For any pose where a baby appears to be unsupported. a "froggy pose," for example, or anything that looks precarious. a parent is present with hands on the baby the entire time. These are composites: two safe images combined in editing. We do not push babies into positions that cause discomfort, and we respond immediately if a baby signals distress.
Our studio is kept warm, clean, and calm. We wash our hands constantly. We move slowly and speak quietly. The entire environment is designed around the baby's comfort and safety.
What to Bring
For baby:
- Extra diapers and wipes (plan for more than you think you'll need)
- A few clothing options if you want any "dressed" shots
- Your feeding setup. breast, pump, or bottles, whatever you're using
- A pacifier if baby takes one
For the session:
- Any meaningful items you want included: a family heirloom, a hand-knit blanket, a stuffed animal that belongs to an older sibling
- Comfortable clothing for yourself. you'll be in some of the shots, and you just had a baby, so wear what feels good
We provide all props, wraps, baskets, backdrops, and everything else. You don't need to bring any of that.
What About Siblings?
Please bring them. Sibling portraits are some of the most precious images from a newborn session. a two-year-old kissing a sleeping baby's head is something you'll look at for the rest of your life.
A few things that help:
- Feed and nap your older child before the session. A hungry or overtired toddler in a warm, quiet studio is a recipe for a difficult afternoon.
- Bring a snack and something to occupy them during the posed baby portion.
- Let them be curious. Kids who are allowed to be a little silly or exploratory usually warm up faster than kids who are told to be perfect.
We're good with kids. We'll make it work.
The Timing of Light and Season in Austin
If you have flexibility on scheduling, we shoot newborn sessions in the morning when natural light is at its best in the studio. Spring and fall in Austin are beautiful for it. Summer mornings work well before the heat builds.
If your baby arrives at a different time of year, don't worry. we work year-round and know how to create beautiful images in every season.
After the Session
Your gallery will be ready in about two to three weeks. You'll receive a full set of edited, high-resolution images to view, select from, and download. We also offer professional printing and albums if you want the images in a form that actually makes it onto your walls.
And if anything isn't exactly right, our Happiness Guarantee covers it. If it's not love. we'll re-edit, re-shoot, or refund. Your satisfaction isn't optional to us.
One Last Thing
The newborn stage feels both endless and impossibly short at the same time. The exhaustion is real. The love is overwhelming. And the way your baby looks in week one. the weight of them, the smell of them, the way they curl into your chest. that doesn't come back.
Photographs do.
Let's make the ones you'll keep forever.
