You've got Hill Country rolling in from the west, the Colorado River threading through the middle, wildflowers in spring, and golden light almost every evening of the year. The question isn't whether there's a great location. it's which one fits your family.

Here's a guide to some of our favorite spots across Austin and the surrounding communities, along with a few things to think about as you plan.

Why Location Matters More Than You Think

A great family photo isn't just about smiles. It's about context. The location tells a story. about where you live, what you love, what this chapter of life looks like. A manicured garden backdrop says something different than a limestone creek bed or a field of Indian paintbrush.

When we talk to families before a session, one of our first questions is: Where do you feel most like yourselves? The answer usually points us right to the perfect spot.

Our Favorite Austin-Area Locations

Barton Creek Greenbelt

One of Austin's most beloved outdoor spaces, and for good reason. The limestone cliffs, clear swimming holes, and tree canopy create an earthy, textured backdrop that photographs beautifully in any season. Best in spring when everything is green, or fall when the light filters through differently. Weekday sessions avoid the weekend crowds.

Bull Creek District Park

A little quieter than Barton Creek, with great variety. wooded areas, open grassy spaces, and the creek itself. It's especially good for families with younger kids who need room to move. The tree coverage means softer, more even light even in the middle of golden hour.

Steiner Ranch Lakeside Trails

If you live in Steiner Ranch, this one's close to home. and genuinely stunning. The Lake Austin views from the higher trails create that classic Texas Hill Country feel, and the vegetation along the lower paths adds incredible texture. We do a lot of sessions out here, and the light in late afternoon is some of the best we've shot in.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park

A little off the radar compared to Barton Creek, but worth it. The lake access, wooded trails, and wide open spaces mean you've got options within one location. Great for families who want variety without driving all over town.

McKinney Falls State Park

Further south, but worth the drive for the waterfall backdrop alone. The cedar and pecan trees frame families beautifully, and the Upper Falls create a dramatic background that's hard to replicate anywhere else in Austin.

Wildflower Fields Near Lakeway and Dripping Springs

In spring. usually late March through mid-April. the roadsides and open fields around Lakeway and Dripping Springs come alive with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. These sessions have a limited window, but the images are iconic. If you're even slightly considering wildflower portraits, book early. These dates fill up fast.

Your Own Neighborhood or Property

Don't overlook the familiar. If you have a beautiful yard, a neighborhood trail, or a stretch of road lined with live oaks, that can make for deeply personal, meaningful portraits. Some of our favorite family sessions have happened right in someone's backyard at sunset.

What to Consider When Choosing a Location

Light first. The most beautiful location in Austin will fall flat in harsh midday sun. We always schedule sessions around golden hour. the hour before sunset. or early morning. When you're picking a location, think about how the light moves through it, not just what it looks like at noon.

Distance and logistics. With kids, especially young ones, travel time matters. A location that's 45 minutes away might sound romantic until you've got a four-year-old melting down in the car. If you have small children, picking somewhere within 20 minutes of home tends to set the session up for success.

Season and timing. Bluebonnets only bloom for a few weeks. The Greenbelt is most lush in spring. Fall foliage in Austin is subtle but real. Knowing what you want the images to feel like. lush and green, golden and warm, open and airy. helps narrow down both location and timing.

The vibe you want. Be honest with yourself about your family's energy. If your kids are wild and need to run, an open field works better than a manicured garden. If your family skews toward the artsy and eclectic, a more textured urban location might feel more authentic than the standard nature backdrop.
